Lovell’s Directory
http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html
-
Lovell’s Directory was
published in Montreal for many, many years. It was like a phone book (without
phone numbers) but listed everyone living in the City and in some cases also
includes the job description and company where the person worked. Now, a number
of Lovell’s directories from the years 1842 to 1950 have been digitized, and can
be views on the internet. You simply click on the year that interests you on
the left hand side of the page.
-
Click on “Annuaire alphabétique montréalais” if you are looking for a
person – (You do have other options)
-
Then click on the letter of the last name – in my case K
for Keyes
-
Then the top portion of each page with the letter “i.e. K”
appears.
-
You pick the page where you guess by alphabet (I went to the
page that showed KEY at the top” – click on the portion of the page that
appears, then the full page opens.
-
There were a few years that I couldn’t get to open – but was
able to view most years.
-
The first name of the person is often abbreviated – for
example my father’s name Victor comes up as “Vic” and my grandfather and
uncle’s first names that were both Andrew comes up as “And”
