Funchion Smith/Schmitz Connection Ohio
« on: January 03, 2015, 12:21:14 PM »

Michael Funchion lived in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio, USA by 1880.  His daughter, Anna married Frank Smith.  His son married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Smith, niece of Frank Smith.  Frank's father is Anthony Smith/Schmitz of Schliedwiler, Trier-Saarburg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.  Anthony immigrated in June 12, 1848 from Antwerp on the Laconia to NY.  He lived in Riley Township, Sandusky, Ohio, USA.  Anthony's sister is a Great-Grandmother to me when she married Johann Meyer of the same county.  Her brother, Anthony's family moved away from Sandusky County, yet, another brother, John, remained and he is listed in a history of Sandusky County.  We are in the process of looking for Anthony's family, and, found this connection to a Irish Canadian Family: Michael Funchion was born in September of 1854 in Canada.

As a side note, a daughter of Joseph and Minnie (Smith) Funchion has her obituary from Lenawee, Michigan, USA (2012).

Re:On the Funchion side, my grandfather, Martin Funchion, was the only brother to stay in St. Columban. I believe that he had 4 or 5 other brothers who moved away. One went to New York State somewhere, another moved to somewhere in Ohio, another moved to Alberta, and I don't know where the others ended up. The Funchion farm was sold by my father to pay off the debts of his brother. The three Funchion siblings who lived and grew up in St. Columban were my dad, John, his brother Richard, and his sister Mary. Richard never married, and had no children. Mary married John Kenna, and they had three daughters, Mae, Jean, and Joan. Jean & Joan are twins, and they still live in St. Columban. Mae Kenna married Jim Templeman of Montreal. Mae has two daughters. Joan Kenna never married, but her twin sister Jean married Ernest Kutchko. Jean and Ernest had three children, all of whom still reside in St. Columban.  From Tim Funchion

Just found out that the Michael Funchion family, Michael born in Canada in September 1854, is connected to my family.

Michael’s daughter married a second cousin, Frank Smith (originally Schmitz from Trier) and Frank’s niece, Wilhelmina married to Michael Funchion’s son, Joseph.  All of Henry County, Ohio.  I don’t have to be on the forum.  Frank and John Smith, sons of Anthony Smith/Schnitz of Schleidweiler, Trier-Saarburg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.  Immigration from Antwerp on the Laconia to NY, June 12, 1848.  An obituary online is from Joseph and “Minnie” Wilhelmina's daughter, Marie.

ADRIAN – Marie Rupley, age 87, of Adrian, died Monday, September 24, 2012, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility under the care of Hospice of Lenawee.

Born February 15th, 1925, at Cadmus, MI, to Joseph and Minnie (Smith) Funchion. She graduated from Clayton school in 1942 and married Ernest Rupley, Jr. on June 10th, 1944. He preceded her in death on February 9th, 1994.  Marie worked for the Adrian School system for 19 years, including Prairie and Michener in the Cafeteria, retiring in 1990. She also worked for Easy Way Laundromat for 10 years. Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a very devote catholic and past that gift of faith on to her children. She joined the Altar Society in 1956 at Rose Da Lima Church in Perrysburg, Ohio. She also belonged to the Woman of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary in Adrian. Marie will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends, who dearly cherished her for their memories that included, family get-togethers, homemade dinners, special occasions and holiday gatherings.

Marie is survived by eight children, Carol (Larry) Wallis, James (Karen) Rupley, Kathleen (James) Johnson, Beth (Philip) Morse, Thomas (Barbara) Rupley, Mary (Rodney) Clark, Stephen Rupley and Joseph (Theresa) Rupley; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Arleta Sager and Maxine Camp; and a brother, Donald Funchion.

The Funeral Liturgy for Marie will be offered on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of Good Counsel Parish with Father Shawn Lowery presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Hudson. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian where a Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Thursday from 9 – 9:45 a.m. at St. Mary of Good Counsel Parish  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Hospice of Lenawee. Envelopes are available at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian.  “The Rupley family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Lenawee Medical Care Facility for the care and kindness that was shown to their mother.”

I would like to know the names of the people in the photo!

I can read French, but, have never been immersed in the language to become fluent.  I am sorry for that.
