Trip to Grosse Ile - August 23rd 2008 - Fergus_Keyes - 07-03-2008

This information may be of interest to some of you....

I've had a number of people call or write asking about our pilgrimage to Grosse ?le on August 23rd of this year.

Everyone is welcome to join us and there are seats still available.  As the numbers increase we just add more buses.  We're limited only by the size of the boat which holds 350 people.

There is a cafeteria on the Island, but feel free to bring a lunch and enjoy a relaxing picnic inside or out.  There are some picnic tables.  There is also snacks and refreshments available on the boat.

Please pay close attention to the leaving time - 6:00 AM.  We need to meet the boat at the Old Port in Quebec City.  Some tours start from Montmagny or Berthier but the water can be choppy.  From Quebec City, it's as smooth as can be.

For anyone interested in joining us, here are the particulars of the trip:

Grosse ?le and the Irish Memorial

Grosse ?le, Quebec was used as a quarantine station in Canada for more than a century.  The tragedy that took place there in 1847 stemmed from the Great Irish Famine, one of the pivotal events in the history of Ireland. Over 5,000 people died at sea, and 5,424 people were buried at Grosse ?le.

On August 15, 1909, the Ancient Order of Hibernians erected a 46 foot tall stanstead granite Celtic cross on Telegraph Hill, the highest point on the island, to commemorate the unlamented loss of life.  The cross stands today, the eternal guardian over the hopes and dreams of those that came but did not leave.

Each year - rain or shine - we make our pilgrimage to Grosse ?le, saying mass at the Irish Cemetery and laying a wreath at the foot the cross. Please ? join us on August 23, 2008.  All are welcome.  Room is available.  Bring your heart and your imagination.
