Notre Dame Cemetery vandals plead guilty

Some justice served and hopefully a sobering message to anyone thinking of vandalizing a cemetery:

Quite a few of my family are buried at Notre Dame in Ottawa. Fortunately non of our family markers were damaged last year.

Second cemetery in the region damaged by vandals withina week! Unbelievable!

My grandparents Legault and great grandparents Charron are buried in Ste Rose-de-Lima. Stone is pretty huge so not likely damaged

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SUNDAY!

Hi Everyone,

I just spoke with Scotty. He unavailable this Saturday, the 22nd., but is ok for Sunday. This will be the start of placing the headstones onto the wall. I think that we all should be there to help with the artistic placement.

Scotty, Martin and myself will be there at 9:00am. We still have 1 row to complete on 2 walls. that should take about 1 hour. So if you all could be there (at the St. Columban Cemetery) say 10:00 am, that would be great.

Teens ordered to pay for cemetery vandalism

I was quite pleased to see this in today's Ottawa Citizen about cemetery vandals being caught and making some restitution in Perth, Ontario. Unfortunately no amount of money or community service will repair all of the damage they inflicted but this time justice did prevail to send a message.

Stupid and Senseless Cemetery Vandalism

Cemetery Vandalism is a real drag and so senseless! Jeff notes another cemetery that has now been vandalized in the Ottawa area. Whenever we do our resoration project, there is no question that this is one issue that we will have give serious consideration. Here is Jeff's notes about the Ottawa attack... ?:'(

This still disturbs me so much anytime I hear about this type of senseless carnage particularly when it touches my family. This is where my (Legault) grandparents and (Charron) great-grandparents are buried in Gatineau just across the river from Ottawa. I've yet to go survey the damage but will be paying a visit on the weekend so hopefully nothing was touched.

I remember when this happened quite a number of years ago as well at Notre Dame in Ottawa and it was a very big deal in the media and the public eye. Think that was in the 70's.

Book Launch and Cemetery Plans

Claude's Book launch yesterday was great and attended by a number of people from our group including Anne; Kelley; Audrey & Ken... The book, itself is very neat. We took some pictures of the event and hope to post them soon.

Claude also gave us an opportunity to speak to the group in attendance about our restoration project. And we were also able to discuss the project with Mr. Charbonneau, the Mayor of St-Colomban and a representative of the Federal member of Parliment for the area and others - Great conversations and obvious support for our efforts.

Of course, this is still in the planning stage. People liked the idea and certainly the concept of making the wall in brick as per a design used in the Huntington Cemetery which Ken Neil included in his report on possibilities. We'll try to get an image of this brick wall idea posted soon so that everyone can see what we are talking about...

Initial Plan for Cemtery Structure

Here is a quick sketch of what we might want to consider, based on our discussion at our last Restoration meeting. (It may be a little hard to see).

At this point it is only in the preliminary concept stage since we do not have permission from the Church yet to install such a structure; and, of course, we do not have a cost estimate at this point.

The proportions are directly related to research done about the Celtic Cross. Of course, the size could change depending on the space available in the cemetery. But, of course, if we, for example made the main walls longer then the arm walls would also change in length etc?.

As you can see, the ends of all the walls are open to allow someone to walk around the structure and view the broken tombstones that we would imbed likely in both sides of the various walls. We have also added a bench in the middle?.

As I say, it is just a starting point ??.

Ken Neil's Report on our Cemetery Project

Kenneth Neil has spent a lot of time and effort to investigate various alternatives on how to honour our ancestors in the Cemetery.

Mainly because his report includes some confidential information, we would prefer not to make this report public at this time.

Ken will present it to the group at our meeting scheduled for tomorrow, May 13th..... I have forwarded a copy to everyone that is likely to attend tomorrow.

The Centre for Canadian Irish Studies

The Centre for Canadian Irish Studies at Concordia University was kind enough, today, March 15th 2006, to send out a copy of our Cemetery Restoration Project pamphlet to everyone of their e-mail list.

With various articles and the support of groups like The Canadian Irish Studies etc., - there should not be too many people, particularly in the Montreal Irish Community, that will not be aware of this effort.
