Irish Cemetery - St. Alphonse de Kildare
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 04-04-2010, 10:43 AM - Forum: General Enquiries - Replies (2)

Does anyone know about this cemetery?

Hi Fergus,

When visiting my sister in Rawdon last year we drove to Joliette.

We couldn't help notice a town called St. Alphonse de Kildare.

I believe it has a cemetary also that has a lot of Irish settlers.

Our regards, Mary & Ross Stenhouse

St. Columban Irish site extends our sympathies
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 03-15-2010, 11:53 AM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

[size=10pt][size=10pt]Everyone involved with the St. Columban-Irish site wish to extend our sympathies to the family of the young man who was killed trying to jump off a float at this year?s annual Montreal St. Patrick?s Day Parade, held yesterday, March 14th 2010.

The exact cause of this accident is unknown but there is a suspicion of liquor being involved - likely combined with the very bad weather conditions that included heavy rain; strong winds and cold weather.

The St. Patrick?s Day Parade has been a fun and family event held annually in Montreal for more than 150 years, and this sudden death certainly saddened the organizers; spectators; and everyone else who contributes to the event.

Subject: Dwyer family from St. Columban

Dear sir,

I recently became aware that my great-grandmother's family came to the US from St. Columban in the mid 1860s.  She was Malvina Alice Dwyer, (born in the US), the 10th of 11 children born to Michael C. Dwyer and Anne Elliott, both of St. Columban.  Michael Dwyer is the son of John Dwyer and Bridget Culleton, who came from Ireland.

Any further information on this family that you may have would be most appreciated!

Sincerely,
Stuart W. Ackley

  AN IRISH HEART
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 03-13-2010, 02:28 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - Replies (1)

There is a new book about Griffintown (A district in Montreal) just published and now available in bookstores called

AN IRSIH HEART
How a small migrant community shaped Canada
By Sharon Doyle Driedger
Harper Collins 404 Pages $ 34.99

There are reviews in both The Montreal Gazette and The Globe & Mail Newspapers. The review in the Gazette specifically mentions that one of the most interesting parts of the book is a section that relates to the effort to move the Irish from Griffintown to St. Columban.

I intend to pick up a copy in the next few days but you might find be interesting. The author will be at a Montreal Bookstore on Tuesday night, March 16th (Paragraph) and signing copies.

  Your Country Your Call Initiative
Posted by: embassyofireland - 03-12-2010, 07:37 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

A note submitted to the group by Paula Molloy, Embassy of Ireland

Good morning all,

I am writing to bring the "Your Country Your Call" initiative to your attention and to ask for your help in making the Irish community here in Canada aware of it.

On St Patrick?s Day, March 17 - the one day annually when people of every nation, and particularly the Irish at home and abroad, look to Ireland - this year Irish people all over the world are being asked to sign on for and participate in an innovative, technology enabled ?crowd sourcing? movement to create new momentum for the Irish economy and Irish society.

?Your Country Your Call? www.yourcountryyourcall.com is a call to people everywhere and everyone with an interest in Ireland to get involved in a competition in two parts to identify proposals which when implemented, could help to create prosperity and jobs for Ireland.

In the first part, two proposals will be selected as winners to receive a ?100,000 prize each. In the second part ?500,000 has been committed to the implementation phase during which the two winning proposals will have the support of a pro bono professional advisory group.

The Embassy would be very grateful for your assistance in forwarding this information on to your members or publishing it on your websites.

Please feel free to get back to me or to Karl Gardner karl.gardner@dfa.ie for more information.  Details are also available on the Embassy's website: http://www.embassyofireland.ca/home/index.aspx?id=83373 or in the attached PDF.

Many thanks,

Paula Molloy

Fergus,

I was wondering if you know of any of the James Grimes/ Ann Clarke descendents from St. Columban that have researched the family history from Ireland (pre-St. Columban).

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
