The Delaneys of St. Columban

Memories of St. Columban

THE DELANEYS OF ST. COLUMBAN
(O DUBHSLAINTE)

FIRST GENERATION

JOHN DELANEY, MY GR GR GR GRANDFATHER, WAS BORN IN THE PARISH OF DUNKERRIN, IRELAND ABOUT 1794. THIS PARISH COMPRISES BOTH OFFALY AND TIPPERARY COUNTIES. THERE HE MARRIED MARGARET CASEY. SHE WAS BORN APPROXIMATELY 1797. THEY HAD SIX CHILDREN, ALL BORN IN IRELAND: JOHN JR, b. 1825, JAMES (MY GR GR GRANDFATHER) b. 1825, ELIZA, b. 1827, MARY, b. 1828, PATRICK, b. 1827 AND DANIEL b. 1832.

IN 1846, DURING THE “POTATOE FAMINE”, JOHN, MARY AND THE FAMILY IMMIGRATED TO CANADA. DURING MY RESEARCH OF ST. COLUMBAN I DISCOVERED THAT THERE  WERE CASEY FAMILY MEMBERS FARMING IN THE AREA. IT IS QUITE

LIKELY THAT THEY WERE RELATED TO MARGARET. THANKS TO ST. COLUMBAN HISTORIAN, CLAUDE BOURGUIGNON, I RECENTLY DISCOVERED THAT ON AUGUST 15, 1829 LAWRENCE DELANEY, A FARMER FROM LAC DES DEUX MONTAGNES, PURCHASED LOT #132 IN ST. COLUMBAN FROM PATRICK BRENNEN. SO WE SEE THAT THE DELANEYS WERE ONE OF THE EARLIER SETTLERS. IT APPEARS THAT LAWRENCE AND HIS WIFE BRIDGIT INNES LIVED ON THIS FARM WHICH CONSISTED OF A LOG HOUSE AND A BARN UNTIL IT WAS SOLD JUNE 20, 1848 TO FRANCIS DONAGHUE. BY THAT TIME LAWRENCE DELANEY HAD PASSED AWAY AND BRIDGIT HAD REMARRIED TO WILLIAM MURCHISON OF GLENGARRY. IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT LAWRENCE WAS RELATED TO JOHN, PERHAPS A BROTHER. SO WE CAN SEE ALL OF THE CONNECTIONS THAT LED MY GR GR GR GRANDFATHER AND HIS FAMILY TO THIS AREA.

AT THIS POINT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DISCOVER THE REASONS FOR LEAVING IRELAND , THEIR METHOD OF TRAVEL NOR THEIR PORT OF ENTRY.  I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT THEY ARRIVED AT THE GROSSE ISLE QUARANTINE STATION TO BE EXAMINED AND PROCESSED. FROM THERE THEY PROBABLY TRAVELLED TO MONTREAL WHERE IN ALL LIKELYHOOD THEY STAYED FOR A WHILE TO GET THEIR BEARINGS AND POSSIBLY EARN SOME MONEY BEFORE MOVING ON.

THE FIRST RECORD THAT I LOCATED WAS THAT OF THE MARRIAGE OF JAMES DELANEY TO BRIDGIT KELLY OF ST. COLUMBAN, OCTOBER 28, 1851.THIS ALSO SHOWED THAT JOHN AND MARGARET  BELONGED TO ST. ANDREW’S PARISH.

I SOON DISCOVERED THAT ST. ANDREW’S WAS IN FACT ST. ANDRE’S, A FRENCH PARISH NEAR CARILLON. THE 1851 CENSUS FOR THAT AREA LISTED JOHN, MARGARET AND THEIR SONS PATRICK AND DANIEL LIVING IN THE VILLIAGE OF ST ANDRE. THE THREE MEN WERE LISTED AS BLACKSMITHS.

IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THERE WERE MANY IRISH IN THIS AREA. OBVIOUSLY, BY THIS TIME ALL OF THE FARM LAND IN ST. COLUMBAN THAT HAD BEEN MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE NEW IRISH IMMIGRANTS BY THE SULSPICIANS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF BISHOP PHELAN HAD BEEN ALLOTTED. AS A RESULT MANY OF THESE PEOPLE MIGRATED THROUGHOUT DEUX MONTAGNES, TERREBONNE, ARGENTEUIL AND OTHER COUNTIES. IN ST. ANDRE WE SEE MANY OF THE SAME FAMILY NAMES AS IN ST. COLUMBAN: BROPHY, FUNCHION, FITZGERALD, KENNA, CASEY, ETC. THESE ARE ALSO COMMON NAMES IN OFFALY AND TIPPERARY COUNTIES IN IRELAND.

ARGENTEUIL WOULD HAVE BEEN ESPECIALLY INTERESTING FOR THESE IMMIGRANTS AS THE LAND HERE WAS MUCH MORE SUITABLE FOR FARMING.

NOT EVERYONE COULD FARM THOUGH AND IN THAT RESPECT THERE WERE PLENTY OF LOCAL PROJECTS WHERE MEN COULD GET DECENT PAYING, ALTHOUGH SOMEWHAT DANGEROUS JOBS. THERE WAS A RAILWAY BEING BUILT TO OTTAWA. A CANAL AT GRENVILLE WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THE CARRILLON DAM WAS BEING BUILT. LUMBERING WAS A BIG INDUSTRY, BOTH HARVESTING AND PROCESSING. MANUFACTURING OF VARIOUS PRODUCTS WAS STARTING UP ACROSS THE AREA, ESPECIALLY IN  LACHUTE.  AS WE CAN SEE IT WAS A VIBRANT SPHERE OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY.  I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE DELANEYS, BEING  BLACKSMITHS,  WOULD HAVE BEEN IN GREAT DEMAND.

IN THE SAME CENSUS ELIZA DELANEY IS SHOWN WITH HER HUSBAND JOHN FITZGERALD AND THEIR CHILDREN LIVING ON THEIR FARM IN THE AREA. ON THE NEXT FARM IS THE RECENTLY MARRIED JAMES DELANEY AND HIS WIFE BRIDGET KELLY.

BY 1858, JOHN AND MARGARET WERE REGISTERED IN THE CHURCH RECORDS AS BELONGING TO ST. COLUMBAN’S PARISH. IN THE CENSUS OF 1861 THEY ARE LIVING WITH DANIEL, HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN. THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THEY’RE MID TO LATE SIXTIES. SOME TIME AFTER THIS JOHN SR., MARGARET, DANIEL AND HIS FAMILY MUST HAVE LEFT ST. COLUMBAN, AS THERE ARE NO RECORDS OF THEM IN THE CENSUS’ OF 1871, 1881 NOR IN 1891.

THE CENSUS OF 1881 DOES SHOW JOHN’S SON JAMES, HIS WIFE BRIDGIT KELLY AND THEIR CHILDREN LIVING ON THEIR FARM, WHICH IS SITUATED ON THE MILLES SIDE OF ST. COLUMBAN. THERE IS NO MENTION OF JOHN OR MARGARET. I HAVE REVIEWED ALL THE CHURCH RECORDS OF BOTH ST COLUMBAN AND ST. ANDRE AND THERE ARE NO RECORDS OF JOHN’S DEATH NOR OF MARGARET’S DEATH. THEY ARE NOT BURIED IN THE ST. COLUMBAN CEMETERY NOR IN THE ST ANDRE CEMETERY.

RECENT RESEARCH HAS LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT THEY MAY HAVE MOVED TO ANOTHER ST. COLUMBAN’S PARISH, IN PERTH, ONTARIO. I HAVE FOUND A JOHN DELANEY AND HIS WIFE MARGARET CASEY BURIED IN THE CEMETERY THERE.  ALSO IN THE CENSUS’  FOR THE AREA WE AGAIN SEE FAMILIAR NAMES : RYAN, BROPHY, KENNA ETC.

 SECOND GENERATION

JOHN DELANEY JR.  WAS BORN AROUND 1825. UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO CONFIRM HIS BIRTH DATE NOR AM I 100% SURE THAT HE IS ACTUALLY JOHN SR.’S SON. I CANNOT FIND ANY DEFINITIVE RECORD LINKING THEM ALTHOUGH CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE WOULD INDICATE THAT HE IS.  I DO KNOW THAT HE CAME FROM IRELAND ON OR BEFORE 1844 AT THE AGE OF NINETEEN OR TWENTY. PERHAPS IT IS HE WHO EMIGRATED FIRST AND THE REST OF THE FAMILY FOLLOWED. I ALSO KNOW THAT HE WAS A BLACKSMITH LIKE JOHN SR.

HE MARRIED MARY BROPHY IN ST. ANDRE’S ON JUNE 2, 1844. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM BROPHY DECEASED AND MARGERET BERRIGAN.  THESE PEOPLE WERE FAMILY FRIENDS OF THE DELANEYS. IN THE CENSUS OF 1851 JOHN JR. AND MARY ARE LIVING IN ST. ANDRE’S WITH THEIR CHILDREN MICHAEL AGE SEVEN, JOHN AGE FIVE AND MARGARET AGE 3. SHORTLY AFTER THIS TIME MARY DIED.

IN THE CENSUS OF 1861, JAMES, BRIDGET AND THEIR FOUR CHILDREN ARE LIVING ON THEIR FARM IN ST ANDRE, IN A ONE STOREY LOG CABIN. ALTHOUGH IT IS A SMALL FARM IT APPEARS THAT JAMES WAS A VERY HARD WORKER AND HE MADE IT SUCCESSFUL. THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF THEIR ASSETS ACCORDING TO THE AGRICULTURAL CENSUS:

  • 20 ACRES  – 18 CULTIVATED
  • 14 ACRES IN CROPS
  • 4 ACRES IN PASTURE

SOMETIME AFTER ELLEN’S BIRTH JAMES SOLD HIS FARM IN ST. ANDRE. ON MAY 2nd, 1863, BEFORE NOTARY AUGUSTUS MACKAY (#7046) HE PURCHASED LAND IN ST. COLUMBAN FROM JAMES BLANCHFIELD. THERE WERE NO BUILDINGS ON THE SITE. THIS LAND WAS LOCATED ON THE MILLE ISLE SIDE OF ST. COLUMBAN. I VISITED THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE FARM. IT IS SITUATED ON FORTIER STREET JUST OFF OF COTE ST. NICHOLAS. IT IS HILLY AND ROCKY TERRAIN AND MUCH OF IT HAS REVERTED BACK TO FORREST. THERE ARE SOME HOMES THERE AND AT THE END OF THE ROAD THERE IS A SMALL LAKE, QUITE PICTURESQUE. IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE THAT THIS WAS ONCE A SUCCESSFUL FARM. I ALSO NOTED THAT ON THE DAY OF MY VISIT, IT  WAS  WARM, WITH A SLIGHT BREEZE, QUITE PLEASANT. WHEN I GOT HOME TO MY SURPRISE MY NECK WAS COVERED WITH BLACK FLY BITES. THIS AFTER ONLY A FEW MOMENTS OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. I CAN’T IMAGINE THE HARDSHIPS THAT THESE SETTLERS ENDURED.

THE CENSUS OF 1871 SHOWS JAMES, HIS WIFE BRIDGET AND SEVEN OF HIS CHILDREN; MARY AGE 19, JAMES AGE 18, CATHERINE AGE 15, MARGARET AGE 14, ELLEN AGE 8, ANN AGE 5 AND PATRICK AGE 4. MISSING IS BRIDGET WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN 11 YEARS OLD. I DON’T HAVE ANY OTHER RECORD OF HER SO I WONDER IF SHE MAY HAVE DIED. THE CENSUS SHOWS THE FARM CONSISTING OF 90 ACRES OF LAND, ONE HOUSE, ONE BARN AND ONE PLOUGH. THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF HIS ASSETS ACCORDING TO THE AGRICULTURAL CENSUS:

  • 32 ACRES IMPROVED
  • ¼ ACRE IN GARDEN AND ORCHARD

  • 3 SHEEP
  • 1 SWINE
  • 45 LBS. BUTTER
  • 7 LBS OF WOOL
  • 9 YDS. HOME MADE CLOTH AND FLANNEL
  • 7 CORD OF TAN BARK
  • 15 CORD FIREWOOD

IN THE CENSUS OF 1881 JAMES, BRIDGET AND THEIR CHILDREN ANN AGE 15, PATRICK AGE 14 AND JOHN AGE 12, ARE STILL LIVING ON THE FARM.  I COULD NOT LOCATE THE AGRICULTURAL CENSUS.

IN 1891 THE CENSUS SHOWS JAMES AGE 68 AND BRIDGET AGE 60 STILL ON THE FARM, ALONG WITH PATRICK AGE 22 AND JOHN AGE 20.  ALSO ELLEN AGE 26 AND ANN AGE 24 HAD RETURNED HOME. THE CENSUS ALSO SHOWS THAT ONE OUT OF THREE BUILDINGS ON THE FARM ARE OCCUPIED. INTERESTINGLY IT ALSO SHOWS THAT ALL OF THEM COULD READ AND WRITE EXCEPT BRIDGET.

THE CENSUS OF 1901 SHOWS JAMES, BORN SEPTEMBER 10th, 1825 IN IRELAND (ARRIVING IN CANADA 1846) AGE 75 YEARS, BRIDGET BORN OCTOBER 7th, 1827 AGE 71YEARS AND SON JOHN BORN AUGUST 12th, 1870 AGE 30 YEARS LIVING ON THE FARM. IT ALSO SHOWS HARRY HANLOW BORN NOV 2nd, 1892 AGE 8 YEARS AND EDDIE HANLOW BORN DECEMBER 1st, 1887 AGE 13 YEARS LIVING WITH THEM. THEY ARE THE CHILDREN OF CATHERINE DELANEY ANLOW AND JOHN ANLOW. CATHERINE DIED DECEMBER 31st, 1895. AFTER HER HUSBAND JOHN REMARRIED IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE CHILDREN WENT TO LIVE WITH THEIR GRANDPARENTS.

LATER WE SEE THAT EDDIE ENLOW  WAS THE GODFATHER TO JOHN JAMES, THE FIRST SON OF JOHN DELANEY AND BRIDGET WILLIAMS, WHO WAS BORN IN 1907.

ON MARCH 24, 1901 THE TITLE TO THE FARM WAS TRANSFERRED TO JOHN DELANEY. THE PAPERWORK WAS DONE BY NOTARY ERNEST PETIT, REGISTER # 23886. AT THE TIME JOHN HAD A RESIDENCE AT 517 CASGRAIN IN MONTREAL.
